So with all that being said, what other things should I be considering? Would there be a significant difference in editing DSLR & GoPro footage on a Mac Pro vs. With either system, I would probably also purchase an external Thunderbolt drive as my primary media drive.Īs it stands, most of my work will still be in LR & PS, but I anticipate doing more and more video over the next few years. Plus, I could still use my existing monitor, and upgrade to a newer monitor in the future if I desire. However, the new Mac Pro seems to be quite a leap up from an iMac in terms of performance (CPU & GPU) as well as price, but might be able to carry me a few more years than the iMac could. On the other hand, the iMac is cheaper and might have enough juice to carry me through the next 3 or so years. I currently use a 24" Dell u2410 with a matte finish, and really don't like the thought of moving away from this to a glossy 27" iMac screen. One of the downsides of an iMac for me is the glossy screen. I'm starting to consider purchasing a new system and am in the process of reading reviews and technical specs of both the iMac and the new Mac Pro. Rendering preview files, applying adjustments, exporting etc all take much longer than I would like. I'm just teaching myself editing so I'm slow, but still, I'm always waiting for the system to catch up. In Premiere I'm ALWAYS waiting for the system. I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 for video and Lightroom & Photoshop for stills.Īs it is I am often maxing out my system just using LR, and it is not nearly as responsive as I would like it to be while working on large RAW & Tiff files, as well as exporting and other intensive tasks. Internally I have a 256gb SSD and I'm using an expresscard esata to connect to external drives. I'm currently on a MacBook Pro 17" 2010 2.66GHz Core i7 maxed out with 8gb of RAM. I'm a photographer primarily, but I have been getting more into the video (mostly DSLR & GoPro footage). I'm in the very early stages of thinking what my next system will be.
